Room U 14 had two windows, and both of them began at pavement level. When somebody walked past outside, Ruth Salzmann saw the shoes first, and then, if she leaned back, as far up as the hip. In eleven years she had learnt to recognise people by their shoes, and she had learnt that this was a completely useless skill.
It was the ninth of March, a Monday, and the list was lying on her desk.
The list was the unit. Two hundred and fourteen cases, homicides, unsolved or disputed, oldest entry 1971, most recent 2014. Each with a file reference, a name, a date and a column headed status, which for one hundred and seventy-nine cases contained the word dormant.
